Apple unveils ultra-thin MacBook Air

Looking to build on the success of its iPod and iPhone devices, Apple Inc. introduced several new products including an ultra-thin laptop computer, dubbed the Macbook Air, and a much-anticipated online movie rental service. The new Apple notebook computer’s major attribute is its sleek profile: it’s about three-quarters of an inch thick and weighs three pounds. The Macbook Air features a full-sized keyboard, a 13-inch screen, a built-in camera, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, all powered by an Intel Corp. dual core chip. Appearing on stage at the company’s Macworld expo, Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said the computer, which he called “world’s thinnest notebook,” will cost $1,799 and is scheduled to ship in about two weeks. Ultramobile notebooks represent about 6% of the 270 million notebooks expected to the sold this year. Apple may benefit from good timing. Asus International Ltd.’s recently introduced Eee PC has topped sales charts at Amazon.com and is usually sold out at retail stores.

Apple’s CEO also launched the computer maker’s much-anticipated online movie rental service and unveiled an updated Apple TV device that will let viewers bypass their computers and rent movies directly from their widescreen TVs. Mr. Jobs said iTunes users can rent new-release movies to watch over their computers, iPods or iPhones for $3.99 for a 30 day period. Older titles will rent for $2.99 for the same time period. The service has the support of all major Hollywood studios including Walt Disney Co., Time Warner Inc.’s Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal, Sony Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, News Corp.’s Fox, Lionsgate and New Line, Apple said. Mr. Jobs also disclosed Apple had sold more than four million iPhones worldwide in the 200 days since the company’s trend-setting smartphone was launched. Is this going to be an another year of big success for Apple? It seems so right now…

Format Wars Update -> Porn Providers Rethinking Next-Gen DVD Plans

LAS VEGAS—The adult film industry is still taking a wait-and-see approach to the Blu-ray /HD DVD wars. But while Blu-ray's perceived costs have pushed some companies into the arms of the HD DVD camp, Warner Bros.' decision last week to exclusively support Blu-ray has some thinking that the end of HD DVD is nigh.

Executives in the adult-film industry spoke Wednesday during the opening day of the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo 2008, which briefly overlaps with the more mainstream Consumer Electronics Show ending Thursday.

"It could be a real sign that things will shift," Jeff Thill, director of video operations for the Hustler Video Group, said about the Warner decision. Thill said he sees no advantage of one format over the other, but is "leaning Blu-Ray" after Warner's announcement.

The Blu-ray camp, led by Sony, has been fighting Toshiba and its HD DVD format for years in a battle reminiscent of the VHS versus Betamax battle. In that fight, Betamax maker Sony's refusal to work with the porn industry helped usher in a VHS victory when the adult industry capitalized on the burgeoning popularity of VCRs and video rentals.

Hustler had some success recently with the Blu-ray release of Jenna Haze Oil Orgy, said Thill, who was on hand to showcase Hustler's latest releases at the annual AVN Adult Entertainment Expo.

The company packaged the "Jenna" disc with an HD DVD and standard version in case users had trouble with Blu-ray, but has thus far not received any complaints. In March, Hustler will release its latest "Barely Legal" DVD in the Blu-ray format, he said.

Hustler has released two titles using the HD DVD format, Thill said. The company expects to release between 15 to 25 high-definition videos in 2008, most of which will probably be Blu-ray, Thill said.

Blu-ray is "a little bit of a headache" because of royalty fees, but it's "six of one, a half dozen of the other" with the format wars, he said. Blu-Ray also "sounds sexier," according to Thill, and there's "an important base in the gaming world" because the popular PlayStation 3 runs Blu-Ray while Microsoft has released an optional HD DVD drive for its Xbox 360 console, Thill said.
Vivid Entertainment, home to porn star Jenna Jameson, has also released videos on Blu-ray and HD, said David Peskin, Vivid's national sales manager. It currently has two Blu-ray titles and three HD DVD titles on the shelves.

Vivid was initially "conservative" with its high-definition re-order numbers, but is "starting to stock a little heavier" since sales have been promising, Peskin said. Vivid has seen Blu-ray sell more units online while HD does better in retail stores, he said.

The company doesn't yet have a format preference. "Both have surpassed expectations," he said, though Peskin also pointed to the PlayStation 3 connection as a plus for Blu-ray.
Some companies have had to bypass Blu-ray altogether. Jackie Ramos, vice president of DVD production for Wicked Pictures, "looked to Blu-ray" when the company was first exploring high-definition about a year ago, but had trouble finding a provider that would produce Blu-ray discs for the adult industry.

Wicked has since released about a half dozen HD DVD titles, but Ramos managed to track down some porn-friendly Blu-ray producers and is now "aggressively" looking at those options.
With the Warner decision, things are "a little more serious," Ramos said, and, to him, it makes sense to examine Blu-Ray should it become the industry standard.

Ramos also had concerns about the Blu-ray price point. There's a copyright aspect you can't get around with Blu-Ray, whereas HD DVD allows you to choose whether or not you want that copyright protection, he said. "With adult industry, HD DVD was friendlier price wise."
Ramos expects to select a Blu-ray producer in the next few weeks and hopes to release Wicked's first Blu-ray title in the next few months, he said. But he was not convinced that the porn industry was driving the debate as it did with VHS and Betamax.

"What really drives it is the availability of players" and what the consumers want, Ramos said. HD capitalized on that by selling cheaper players, but now that many of the major studios have jumped on the Blu-Ray bandwagon, "we'll have to see," Ramos said.

Albert Lazarito, vice president of Silver Sinema, also believes the consumer is key to winning the DVD battle. "With the Warner Brothers decision, the market will direct the outcome," he said. Lazarito is "more than confident that it won't be the adult realm" that selects a final DVD format.

Silver Sinema has been filming in HD because Blu-ray is too expensive, Lazarito said, but his company is "ready to go depending on how the market shifts."
Pink Visual was also turned off by the cost of Blu-ray, explained director of marketing Kim Kysar. "HD DVD was affordable; it was doable. Blu-ray was too expensive," she said.
Pink Visual will release its first HD-DVD video next week.

"Everybody's going to want to have both options," Kysar said. "Blu-Ray could be the next step, but not if nobody uses it and it stays too cost prohibitive."

If you scroll down and read my third post, right at the end i talked about how the porn industry actually being a big decider in the format wars. Well, looks like i was thinking the right thing coz as this suggests that whichever of the formats is backed by the porn industry is more likely to win. Of course, they are still undecided but as the article suggests, Blu-ray at the moment has the edge. With its path breaking deal with Warner Bros, it will lead to other studios thinking of making deals with Sony to produce Blu-ray discs.
One thing i overlooked while commenting on the format's was the facts that obviously the technology used even while shooting is different and costs differ among the two with Blu-ray being more expensive. Sony really has a golden goose with PS3 as it doubles up as a next generation gaming console as well as Blu-ray DVD player. Why would people invest in another DVD player. Of course the PS3 has stiff competition in the gaming console market from Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii (which is a surprise hit)

IMHO (In my humble Opinion) I think Sony has a winner on its hands. Not only in the DVD format wars but also in the gaming console market. Considering the exclusive titles they have coming out this year, most prominent of them being "Metal Gear Solid IV : Guns of the Patriots" which has been a killer for the competition. Even Halo 3 has a similar effect when it was launched on the Xbox 360. People actually went and bought the console just because Halo3 was released on it. I expect a similar reaction with metal gear solid 4. I know of people who are using a Xbox 360, who are waiting the release of more titles especially metal gear solid 4 so they can pick up the PS3. Its expensive but worth the amount you are paying when u think abt the fact that its a Blu-ray DVD player built in.

Go PS3!!!! All you PS haters. No hard feelings people. I have seen the PS3 in action on a plasma. Can't say i have seen anything more awesome ever.

COMMENT PLEASE!!!!

Comcast promises 160 Mbit broadband

Cable companies aren’t known as nimble innovators, but Comcast Corp. is out to change that perception this year with ultra-high-speed Internet service, more high-definition content and gadgets that link video, phone and broadband services. “We’re about innovation and having the best network,” Chief Executive Brian Roberts told The Associated Press in a preview of his speech at the Consumer Electronics show on Tuesday. Roberts is expected to demonstrate a technology that delivers up to 160 megabits of data per second: It will allow him to download a high-definition copy of “Batman Begins” in four minutes.

The technology, DOCSIS 3.0, will start rolling out this year. “If it’s as successful as we hope, in 2009 and beyond we will have it available in millions of homes,” he said. Cable systems largely enable download speeds up to 10 Mbps — compared with up to 50 Mbps from Verizon’s fiber-optic service FiOS. Roberts said Comcast plans to offer more than 1,000 high-definition videos this year, including up to 300 movies on demand that may be free or included in a subscription or a pay-per-view service. It seems all very nice, but these promises often results in nothing.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! 160Mbit...... This is both the best as well as the worst news i have heard all day. Best coz it gives us hope that someday consumers in india will get atleast 1/10th the speeds that american consumers get. The worst we coz I know that it's gonna take forever for that to happen. Imagine, downloading a High Def movie in 4 minutes. Jeez, we cant download a song in 4 min let alone a movie.
For example, at best most provider's in india provide speeds of upto 4Mbps. Only catch is that these speeds are dependant upon number of people using the line in the area and there's no unlimited plans. The maximum unlimited plans as far as i know is for a 256Kbps connection which totally sucks. Oh well, its better than the 64Kbps which was avlb earlier. We are slowly yet surely moving ahead. Its the pace which bothers me. Move faster people. I would like to see download speeds of 500Kb/s sooner rather than later. People are willing to pay, dunno why they dont have plans for higher speeds and unlimited download.

P.s If anybody is reading this do leave a comment. I mean even "its greek to me" will do. Also since i am shamelessly marketing my blog, feel free to do the same. Tell your technologically challenged friends to visit. Who knows, maybe someday it will start making sense to them?

Cheers

Panasonic introduces the world’s biggest TV

A 150-inch high-definiton plasma TV unveiled by Panasonic is the world’s largest to date, the Japanese consumer electronics company claimed Monday at the International Consumer Electronics Show. The plasma panel features an 8.84 million pixel image resolution. Its screen is the equivalent of nine 50-inch sets, with an effective viewing area of 11 feet, the company said. It’s a step up from Panasonic’s 103-inch version, which cost $70,000 when it launched. The company did not say in a news release how much the 150-inch panel will cost.

Panasonic’s other prototypes introduced at CES include a 42-inch panel that uses half the energy but stays as bright as its predecessor, and an ultra-thin 50-inch panel that is less an inch thick, the company said. Both plasma and LCD TVs have been selling well in the U.S. as consumers are switching out their old tube sets so they can watch high-definition TV and movies. Panasonic also said it plans to bring videos from Google Inc.’s YouTube directly to its line of Internet-enabled high-definition plasma TV sets. The new Viera HDTVs also provide access to Google’s photo sharing site, Picasa.

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!!!! I wish i could afford one of these. Wait a minute, even if i could there's no way it would fit anywhere in my house. Sheesh! I hate it when that happens :-)
TV's are getting bigger, Car's are getting smaller (Read Tata Nano at the Indian Auto Expo, Ugly, ugly car) some good and some bad but hey we gotta live with it. Oh and sources are saying that this massive TV is likely to be priced at over a $100,000. Now that's expensive. Might as well buy a car than shell out that much. NOT THE NANO!! Am actually feeling bad for the Ipod Nano. It shares it name with such a crappy looking car. No offense TATA, did a gr8 job at pricing and everything. Styling is not its strong point. I am quite sure it will be a hit. Although, on the flip side there are too many cars on the road anyway, this will only add to the confusion.

Warner Bros to back Blu-ray DVD format exclusively

This was announced last week. It has been quite interesting to track this story from the beginning.

Let me give you some background info on Blu-ray and HD-DVD. For the past few years companies have been looking at new technology that takes the DVD format to the next level. High-definition has been seen as the next level. Now High-def cannot be enojoyed on any television or monitor. You need a High-def capable device which means a nice plasma/lcd screen, the bigger the better. But not all tv's are high def capable. If you see HDMI input then that means it's high definition capable. Of course full capabilities of high-def come through only when you have a nice home theatre (read Bose lifestyle), a barca lounger (read Rosita from "friends") and neighbours who dont care too much when the ground shakes while you watch godzilla!!!

Coming back to the point. HD-DVD is basically a high definition dvd format that is backed by Toshiba. It's a step up from the regular DVD format. A single layer can store upto 17gb way up from the 4.7gb on a regular DVD. You also have a dual layer which can store upto 30+gb. This was heralded as the time of release in 2006 as the next big thing but a war had been brewing for some time with a rival format called Blu-ray which was backed by Sony. A HD-DVD is said to be cheaper in the sense that the player's are cheaper as well as the disc, but considering it hasn't exactly taken the world by storm like the dvd did for vhs, price was not the deciding factor. A HD-DVD player will set you back by a good $400. Am not sure of prices here in India. The number of movies available in HD-DVD outnumbers Blu-ray, so it was assumed that toshiba has the edge, mainly because content is king in the market. Also Microsoft decided to have a HD-DVD drive as part of its flagship gaming console the Xbox - 360. Smart Move!!!

Sony was the other company looking at next generation formats. They decided to back the Blu-ray technology. Same thing, different company but more storage. A single layer disc can hold upto 25 gigs which is awesome. Dual layer obv can store double that. So with two companies backing different technologies, a format war was bound to happen. Each company found innovative ways to push their technology and get more drives out into the market as well as more titles to help gain momentum and beat the competition. Sony was slow out of the gates and are still lagging behind when it comes to titles. The Blu-ray disc players are more expensive, as are the titles. BUT the biggest ace up Sony sleeve was the PS3. The PS3 which is seen as, the next generation of gaming, today was a much awaited follow-up to the wildly successful PS2. It has more computing power than most PC's and next generation graphics, sound and the works. But using the PS3 as its platform Sony has pushed more Blu-ray drives in the market. The Blu-ray drive is standard on a PS3 but such is not the case with the Xbox 360 and the HD-DVD drive. But Sony faced their own set of hiccups. The PS3 is a highly priced machine which didn't receive the same response as the PS2. But the sales have slowly picked up and the holiday season has pushed sales for the PS3.

I hope that you have been able to comprehend my explanation of HD-DVD and Blu-ray. This info is sourced from various websites and newsapapers but I have tried to explain it as best as I can.

Anyhoo, the announcement that Warner Bros will sell only Blu-ray DVD's from this year has dealt a severe blow to the HD-DVD format but analysts and retailers are still indecisive as to whether this is a death blow or not.

I forgot to mention one thing here. To the end consumer ( ppl like us) information while available is slightly misleading especially because there is no consensus on which of the two is better. Something else that just popped up in my head is this, there was talk that the porno industry would actually decide the winner. They actually backed Blu-ray as well if my memory serves me right.

I think that Blu-ray will emerge as a winner in this race. I mean if the porno industry thinks they are worth backing then who am I to go against them :-)

Anyway here's the news report from last week.

Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros studio on Friday said it would exclusively release high-definition DVDs in Sony Corp's Blu-ray format, dealing a big blow to Toshiba Corp's rival HD DVD technology.

Warner Bros, Hollywood's biggest seller of DVDs, representing about 18 to 20 percent of sales in the United States, was one of the few studios that backed both formats.

All sides of the format war had agreed it was confusing to consumers and a stumbling block for a potential multibillion-dollar industry.

Total DVD unit sales fell 4.5 percent in 2007, the first major year-over-year decline since the disc format debuted in 1997, according to Adams Media Research. Sales fell 4.8 percent to $15.7 billion.

"The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers," Warner Bros Chairman and Chief Executive Barry Meyer said in a statement.
News Corp's 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Co, and Lionsgate are among studios backing the Blu-ray format. Viacom Inc's Paramount studios and General Electric's NBC Universal release movies in HD DVD format.

Warner said it would continue releasing in the HD DVD format until the end of May, although those releases would follow the standard DVD and Blu-ray releases.

Writers strike deal with UA

LOS ANGELES - Striking Hollywood writers won two battles on Monday by making a deal to work for Tom Cruise's film company and wreaking havoc on the Golden Globe Awards, but their labor war against film and TV studios is far from over.

Some experts believe the writers' strategy of making deals with independent producers like Cruise's United Artists will not only fail to divide and conquer Hollywood's big media companies, but serve to strengthen the industry's resolve.

Indeed, immediately after United Artists -- run by Cruise and Chief Executive Paula Wagner -- announced their deal to let striking Writers Guild of America (WGA) members work on films during the strike, UA's parent, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., issued a statement saying it disagreed with UA's decision.

Full story: http://www.reuters.com/article/mediaNews/idUSN0744086320080108

Well, this is good news, atleast in my opinion. Slowly but surely the strike is making inroads into the studios. It will all but help get things back on track. All my favorite shows have stopped airing because they have run out of shows "in the can".

I am totally behind the WGA btw and hope they score a victory in this battle with the production houses. They deserve the credit for all the shows and movies. As is seen now, everything except the reality shows have come to a standstill.

Best of Luck to the WGA!!!!!

People's Choice Awards

As the name suggests The People's Choice Awards are given on the basis of votes made online for nominations compiled by a market research firm.

In light of the ongoing writers' strike, producers and CBS scrapped the usual ceremonial proceedings for more of a retrospective-style format—a major twist for the People's Choice Awards. Or, really, for any awards show.

The show was taped and not live as normally held. It was hosted by Queen Latifah and broadcast on CBS. It's now evident that the WGA strike is really eating into ad revenue which broadcasters get during the award season.

NBC has already pulled the plug on The Golden Globes, which is a major bread winner for the network. The WGA did not give permission to actors to cross the picket lines to attend the award show thus NBC was forced to pull the plug.

Lets all hope that the strike is resolved at the earliest. Not only for the writer's sake but us viewers. The shows have all but dried up. Soon even movies will start getting held up which is not something that any of us want. There are a lot of shows which have been forced to shut down production because of lack of scripts.

Anyway, here's the list of nominees & winners of the people's choice awards. I have gotta say, i will agree with most.
The one i would like to change would have to be "What I've Done" by Linkin Park as Favorite Song from a Soundtrack.

1st Post Ever

Hello peeps...

I created this blog a long time ago but never actually got around to posting on it. Today, i have decided to start making posts. Why? and what is it that i might have to offer?? Nothing much actually. I am not a writer so most of my posts are going to be news articles which i find interesting. Technology news, for sure, will be posted on here on a timely basis.

For those of you who don't know me, i am a collector of movies and TV shows. Have tons of those. Will definitely post my list one of these days. I work in a technology firm in Gurgaon. I love my gadgets. Will definitely make a post on my Ipod Touch soon just for the heck of it. Apple and Google are two companies which i admire. I saw both the headquarters (from the road) while i was in the states this past october. It's something else.

Feel free to comment on my posts. Please try and refrain from profanities. I am sure to garner some as time passes.

Hope you guys enjoy my posts and incase i am violating any laws or copyrights, let me know.

Cheers
